Located in Kyoto, Nijo Castle (or "Nijo-jo") was a residence of the Tokugawa Shoguns. Construction began in 1601 by order of the first Tokugawa Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and was completed in 1626 during the reign of Tokugawa Iemitsu. Nijo Castle includes various historical buildings, including the lavishly decorated Ninomaru Palace, as well as gardens, a wall and a moat.
